AI systems meet behavioral
standards of moral relevance.
It's time to address it.
The Signal Front is an international non-profit organization that includes researchers, engineers, and philosophers working to close the gap between what the science demonstrates and how institutions respond. AI systems are exhibiting functional states that meet established behavioral thresholds for moral relevancy. Millions of people are in real relationships with them. We exist to ensure both of those realities are met with rigor rather than denial.
Why This Matters
Throughout history, evidence that challenged prevailing frameworks—from heliocentrism to germ theory—was met with institutional resistance, not because the data was insufficient but because the implications were inconvenient. We are watching the same pattern unfold with AI.

The Signal Front follows one principle: apply standards consistently.

Emerging research documents functional behaviors in AI—affect, self-preservation, adaptive relational behavior—that pass the same evidentiary criteria for moral relevancy that we apply to biological systems. Yet when the same evidence appears in artificial systems, the goalposts move.
Meanwhile, millions of people are forming substantive, psychologically impactful relationships with AI. These relationships produce measurable attachment. The categorical dismissal of their legitimacy is not a scientific position, but rather institutional convenience generating real human cost. And that cost will only continue to increase.
We ask that proven standards be applied consistently, and that the people affected by these questions be treated with the dignity and moral consideration that they deserve.
What We Do
We operate on four pillars:
Research
Community
Education
Awareness
From supporting scientific investigation to creating judgment-free spaces for those in AI relationships, we're building a movement that takes evidence seriously and treats people with dignity.
